Welby Lane RTC
4mm/ OO scale – DCC Lenz systemOwner – Mark Pearson – member of MRPG / SDEG
During the early 1970’s it was recognized at the Derby R.T.C that they required more extensive testing facilities with the oncoming projects of the H.S.D.T and A.P.T-E .Therefore a former disused quarry line on the Old Dalby spur near Melton Mowbray was identified, to provide additional storage and test facilities along with a small maintenance area. Although this area still survives it is now a business park and has lost its rail connection.
Welby Lane can be seen here on a busy testing day with many of the department’s strange and odd looking vehicles being used on various test trains. Many items are adapted RTR, kit or scratch built. All locomotives are sound fitted and detailed. Kadee couplings are used throughout the fleet.
Many of the buildings and structures on the layout are representations of actual ones on both the Mickleover and Old Dalby test tracks and also at the Derby R.T.C.
Exhibition running sessions start in the early 1970’s and end later in the day in the late 1980’s where our time machine ends!
